Description
This route was specially created for those, who like some adrenaline during their contact with nature.
The Carretão trail is just one of several historical routes from Cuiabá to the Chapada dos Guimarães, and can be done by hiking or, for the daring, by bike.
The tour takes us into the Chapada dos Guimarães National Park, across the Mount St. Jeronimo area, where one finds beautiful cerrado landscapes, sandstone formations, carved through the ages, and several linked trails, offering viewpoints across the whole region.
The route leads to the St. Jeronimo Community, where one can have a typical galinhada dish, and taste some of the delicious, locally grown pineapples, besides several other seasonal fruits. This place can be reached by following two different trails, but the up-hill one is quite harder.
Crossing several streams, with cascades and clear springs, the trail leads along gallery forests, which shelter lots of bird species, one of world’s largest butterfly, and many insects, still unknown to the scientific world.
The tour may vary in its route and duration, including the overnights at local communities or even in the forest, sleeping in tents or hammocks.
We support several groups simultaneously, working with a local team of guides. There is also a place to stay overnight in a house or a campground in the pleasant area of the Chapada dos Guimarães.
The bikes for rent are aluminium framed, 18 or 21 gears. The bikers may also bring their own one or buy it at Cuiabá.
Best months for biking in the Chapada are Apr-Jun and Oct-Dec, when the streams carry more water, and some temporary rainfalls clear the air from the dust.
