Description
This truly interesting tour takes you right into the poorer part of Salvador – the part where 80% of the local population lives. That means an area that is commonly made up of what are called favelas (slums), but which are really just neighbourhoods with poor infrastructure, a lack of possibilities, problems with drugs, few recreation areas and an overall struggle for a better life of its working-class people. Our tour introduces you to a favela called Plataforma, an area of approximately 35,000 inhabitants. Some of the children involved in a local social project will act as your guides through this neighbourhood and will also introduce you to the social work that is going on. The project has been created with a view to creating an ”alternative” for local youngsters – an alternative to drugs, robberies and violence.
Program
- You will be collected at your hotel at 8:00am and from there we will follow for the Ribeira along the coast.
- We will catch the ferry boat from Ribeira to Plataforma which takes about 20 minutes.
- When we arrive, our local guides from the Plataforma project will be waiting to meet us and they will show us around some of the area before taking us to the headquarters of the social project where they will explain their work to us.
- There will be shown us a presentation about the project and outline how it works, what has already been achieved and how it embraces and benefits the community.
- From there, we will carry on with our tour of the area, starting with the house of the artist and poet Perinho Santana, a very important person in the community as his works literally make Plataforma’s streets more colourful. We will continue to a small neighbourhood which the community calls the “invasão”, an area with narrow streets and wooden houses.
- Later on, we will visit the higher part of Plataforma from where we will have one of the most beautiful sights of the bay. This is followed by introducing us to the school system and we will also hear about the legacy of black people in the favela, as well as some entertaining stories of the place and about the church of São Brás, its protector.
- Finally, our tour takes us to the old working heart of the original village and the first textile plant in Bahia where we will learn something of its history.
- We then take the train to Calçada or the boat to Ribeira depending on the transport time table, and return to your hotel.
- End of our services.
